Woven patterned boxes have a weft of painted dowels which intermesh at the corners like a lob cabin. Each box (5"x5"x4.75") is made up of three pieces - two square sides and a long piece that forms the front, bottom, back, lid and lid flap. Plain weave, checks and stripes can be woven on a four-shaft loom. More elaborate pattens with dots and dashes require eight shafts. HANDWOVEN Sep-Oct 1988 (v.9#4) pg. 38, 97
